Virginia lawmaker hopes blockchain can be used to secure elections, boost economy
Ayala, a Democrat who represents the Richmond-area 28th District, introduced two bills this week that would study the potential uses of blockchain technology in Virginia.
One bill would direct the Virginia Department of Elections to study current blockchain voting mechanisms and determine whether and how to implement blockchain in elections.
“We have to take blockchain very seriously and understand it has the mechanics and mechanisms that could potentially provide us with more secure election protection,” Ayala said in an interview.
The other bill would create a two-year study on the prevalence and role of blockchain technology in interstate commerce. The study would be conducted by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) and would produce multiple reports outlining what the government should do to foster blockchain sector growth.
Ayala said the study would help the state determine how to take advantage of blockchain technology to boost the economy.
“We need to do our homework first to see how we can apply these technologies to our businesses as well as our elections,” she said.
