A New York man who claimed responsibility for a $114 million crypto heist has been arrested in Puerto Rico and charged with commodities fraud, commodities manipulation, and wire fraud.
Eric Daniel Eisenberg, 25, was arrested on Dec. 26 and appeared in federal court in New York City on Wednesday. He is being held without bail.
Eisenberg is accused of being part of a group that exploited a vulnerability in the Solana-based decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol Mango Markets. The group was able to withdraw $114 million from the protocol before the exploit was patched.
After pulling off the heist, Eisenberg revealed himself on Twitter and said that he had returned $67 million to the Mango Markets decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) in an attempt to preempt a lawsuit.
However, Mango Labs, the company behind Mango Markets, is still suing Eisenberg for the remaining $47 million. The company is also seeking to recover the $67 million that Eisenberg returned.
Eisenberg's lawyer, Brian Klein, told U.S. Magistrate Judge Jennifer Willis that his client was tired from his travels, which included a stopover in Oklahoma.
"He didn't get a lot of sleep last night," Klein said.
Eisenberg, wearing a canary-yellow jumpsuit and ankle shackles, sat slouched in his seat next to Klein and occasionally ran his hands through his hair. Eisenberg's parents were also present.
