**Tether (USDT) Market Cap Grows to $71.6B as Binance USD (BUSD) Declines**
Tether (USDT), the world's largest stablecoin, has seen its market capitalization grow to $71.6 billion, as rival Binance USD (BUSD) has declined in recent weeks.
USDT's market capitalization has grown by $5.3 billion so far this year, with $3 billion of those gains coming after mid-February. BUSD, on the other hand, has shrunk by more than $7 billion since Paxos, its issuer, announced on Feb. 13 that it would halt minting new BUSD tokens due to pressure from the New York Department of Financial Services.
Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that are pegged to a fiat currency, such as the U.S. dollar. They are used to facilitate trading on exchanges and making transactions between fiat money and the digital asset world.
USDT is the most traded cryptocurrency with some $27 billion of trading volume in the past 24 hours, according to CoinGecko, larger than BTC.
Despite its dominance, Tether has been criticized for its lack of transparency about its reserves. Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Tether used bank accounts accessed by falsified documents in 2018. In September, a New York judge ordered Tether to present financial records on USDT's reserve assets in a lawsuit that alleges Tether conspired to issue USDT to prop up the price of bitcoin (BTC).
