**IRS Uses Chainalysis Software to Trace Bitcoin Transactions**
The Internal Revenue Service is using Chainalysis software to trace bitcoin transactions, according to new documents.
The IRS has an active contract with Chainalysis that is valid through the end of September. To date, the IRS has paid Chainalysis more than $88,000.
The IRS says it is using the software to "trace the movement of money through the bitcoin economy," and to "identify and obtain evidence on individuals using bitcoin to either launder money or conceal income as part of tax fraud or other federal crimes."
This is not the first time that the IRS has used Chainalysis software. In 2018, the agency used Chainalysis to track down a group of criminals who had stolen $1 million in bitcoin.
The IRS's use of Chainalysis software is a sign that the agency is taking a more active role in cryptocurrency enforcement. In recent months, the IRS has also issued guidance on how cryptocurrency taxpayers should report their taxes.
