**Elk: A Development Board for Blockchain-Connected Devices**
Elk is a new development board that makes it easier to connect and program blockchain-connected devices. The board has two processors, as well as storage and a WiFi module. It will support Ethereum and Bitcoin, and uses Whisper and Swarm for decentralized messaging and storage. The team plans to add support for other blockchains going forward.
Elk was created by AMR Saleh, Islam El-AHHI, and Islam Mustafa. The trio previously created the 1sheard, a board that lets you control IoT devices using Ethereum. The development of Elk was inspired by the 1sheard.
"We believe current blockchain development is subpar, let alone blockchain development for embedded devices," said Saleh. "There's room to make a 10x improvement to the UX and that's what we're setting out to do, with all the libraries that Arduino already supports."
The team built the Elk board at a hackathon and found the concept so compelling that they decided to turn it into a product.
"At the EthDenver 2018 Hackathon, we built a prototype of a development board that offers the simplicity of Arduino for building blockchain-connected devices," said Saleh. "We ended up winning first place, and the Elk project was born."
The team is crowdfunding Elk in June 2019 and has a placeholder website up to collect email addresses from interested parties. Pricing hasn't been announced, but the Kickstarter campaign will offer early-bird discounts.
