**Blockchain associations from Australia and the five Southeast Asian nations are working to promote Blockchain development and education.**
Blockchain organizations from Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to promote blockchain cooperation in the Asia Pacific.
The MoU was initiated by the Singapore Blockchain Association (BAS). It aims to collaborate with regulators to ensure compliance with regulations, as well as to raise awareness and education in the industry.
The new association, called the ASEAN Blockchain Consortium (ABC), includes BAS, Blockchain Australia, the Philippines Blockchain Association, the Labuan International Financial and Business Centre (LIBFC) in Malaysia, the Thai Digital Asset Operators Association (TDAO), and the Asosiasi Blockchain Indonesia.
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by several government representatives, including Edi Prio Pambudi, Senior Advisor to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of Indonesia, and Sopnendu Mohanty, Fintech Director at the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
This initiative marks the first collaboration between blockchain organizations across Southeast Asia and Australia.
“The growth in the blockchain industry and digital assets is very significant and BAS is proud to collaborate with our ASEAN and Australian partners to further support the development of the industry at a sustainable and inclusive pace,” said BAS Chairman Chia Hock Lai.
The launch of the ABC comes amid increasing cryptocurrency adoption in Southeast Asia and Australia. According to Statista, Southeast Asia was among the leading regions for cryptocurrency adoption last year, with 20% of Filipinos surveyed saying they used cryptocurrencies in 2020. The industry is also gaining momentum in Australia, with nearly 20% of Australian adults surveyed saying they owned cryptocurrencies last year.
