The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has warned investors of the E-Coin cryptocurrency, which it says is a scam.
FINMA said that E-Coin is not a decentralized cryptocurrency, but is instead controlled by a single entity. The agency said that E-Coin is similar to the deposit-taking business of a bank, which is illegal unless the company in question holds the relevant financial market license.
FINMA has also warned three other companies against offering fake cryptocurrencies: Suisse Finance GmbH in Liquidation, Euro Solution GmbH, and Animax United LP.
The regulator is also investigating other groups for potentially unauthorized cryptocurrency sales.
