**Australia's Advertising Standards Board (ASB) has updated its cryptocurrency advertising guidelines to crack down on misleading and deceptive crypto ads.**
The new rules, which come into effect on March 1, require crypto ads to prominently disclose that investing in cryptocurrency assets can result in the loss of capital.
Social media influencers and ambassadors must also only share factual information about cryptocurrencies and not offer advice on trading or make guarantees of returns.
ASB CEO Gair Schimmel said the new rules were a “fantastic example of an industry that sees the harm that could be done in its name, and steps up to self-regulate the issues without being forced to do so by government.”
The move comes as regulators around the world are increasingly scrutinizing the cryptocurrency industry, with a number of high-profile cases of celebrity endorsements gone wrong.
In the United States, reality TV star and influencer Kim Kardashian recently settled with the Securities and Exchange Commission for $1.26 million for promoting EthereumMax without disclosing that she was being paid to do so.
