**SoftBank to Use Blockchain for ID Verification**
SoftBank is working with TBCASoft to develop a blockchain-based identification and authentication service. The new service, called the Cross-Carrier Identification System (CCIS), will use zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) cryptography and distributed ledger technology (DLT) to enable the issuing, storing, and authentication of users' identification in a private and secure way.
The CCIS system aims to address the problems that users of current identification and verification services face, such as having to trust a centralized organization and disclosing personal data to multiple entities. The CCIS system will allow users to "free themselves from creating multiple accounts and remembering countless passwords to protect their personal information from identity theft," the company said.
SoftBank and TBCASoft are also looking to collaborate with other telecom operators under the CBSG Consortium for the initiative. The CBSG Consortium was launched back in September 2017, with other major operators including U.S.-based carrier Sprint and one of Taiwan's largest telecom operators FarEstone. The consortium has already successfully tested blockchain systems for mobile payments and topping up prepaid phones across different carriers using TBCASoft's platform.
This is not the first time that SoftBank has been involved in blockchain projects. In 2018, the company invested $100 million in a blockchain-based mobile payments startup called Ripple. SoftBank has also been working with Nasdaq-listed Synchronoss Technologies to develop a blockchain-based platform for peer-to-peer mobile payments across different carriers.
