**US Senate Bill Defines Digital Currencies, Targets Prepaid Access Devices at Borders**
A new bill introduced in the US Senate would define digital currencies and target prepaid access devices at borders.
The bill, introduced by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), would amend the Bank Secrecy Act to include digital currencies within the definition of “monetary instruments.”
The bill would also require the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency to submit a report on its policies for detecting prepaid access devices and digital currencies at border crossings and ports of entry.
The report would be due 18 months after the bill is enacted.
Grassley said in a statement that the bill is “aimed at ensuring that digital currencies are subject to the same anti-money laundering (AML) requirements as traditional financial products.”
“Prepaid access devices and digital currencies can be used to facilitate illicit activity, such as money laundering and terrorist financing,” he said. “This bill will help CBP better detect and prevent these activities at our borders.”
The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
