The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has sued Terraform Labs and its founder Do Kwon for allegedly misleading investors about the stablecoin TerraUSD (UST).
The SEC claims that Terraform and Kwon falsely claimed that UST was backed by the US dollar, when in reality it was not. The complaint also alleges that Terraform and Kwon worked with a US trading firm to artificially prop up the price of UST.
The collapse of TerraUSD last year led to a wave of bankruptcies in the crypto industry.
In a press release, SEC Director of Enforcement Gurbir Grewal said that the Terra project "was neither decentralized nor a legitimate investment."
"It was simply a Ponzi scheme propped up by a so-called algorithmic 'stablecoin'—the price of which was controlled by the defendants, not any code," he said.
