Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873) was an American politician, lawyer, and jurist who served as the sixth Chief Justice of the United States (1864-1873) and the 23rd Governor of Ohio (1855-1859). He was also the Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln (1861-1864).
Chase was born in Cornish, New Hampshire, in 1808. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1826 and then studied law at Cincinnati Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1829 and began practicing law in Cincinnati.
In 1849, Chase was elected to the United States Senate from Ohio. He served in the Senate until 1855, when he was elected Governor of Ohio. Chase was a strong opponent of slavery and supported the Wilmot Proviso, which would have prohibited slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico after the Mexican-American War.
In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Chase Secretary of the Treasury. Chase played a key role in financing the Union war effort during the Civil War. He also issued the greenback, which helped to stabilize the Union economy during the war.
In 1864, Chase was appointed Chief Justice of the United States. He served in this position until his death in 1873. Chase was a strong supporter of the Union during the Civil War and played a key role in shaping the postwar American economy.
