**Sberbank and Trafigura Complete First Blockchain Trade Finance Transaction**
Russian state-owned bank Sberbank and commodities trading giant Trafigura have completed the first blockchain-based trade finance transaction.
The deal, which involved the sale of receivables from a Turkish client to Sberbank, was settled using the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain platform.
The transaction took one hour to complete, compared to one day for a traditional trade finance transaction.
Sberbank said the pilot showed how blockchain technology can improve efficiency and reduce costs in trade finance.
“The transaction flowed seamlessly between Sberbank and Trafigura,” a Trafigura spokesperson told CoinDesk. “We are now discussing how we can use the technology for foreign use cases.”
Sberbank has been exploring the use of blockchain technology for several years. In November, the bank completed an off-exchange repurchase agreement deal with the Cyprus branch of Russian investment company Interros using the Hyperledger Fabric platform.
In 2017, Sberbank launched another pilot, in which a payment involving the Russian companies Megafon, Megalabs and Alfa-Bank was recorded on a distributed ledger using Fabric.
Sberbank is also a member of the Fintech Association, a consortium backed by the Russian Central Bank that is working on an Ethereum-based enterprise platform dubbed Masterchain.
