Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said that the U.S. is "losing" the global cryptocurrency race and that he would consider moving the company's headquarters if the regulatory environment becomes more hostile.
Garlinghouse made the comments in an interview with CNBC on Thursday. He acknowledged that moving Ripple's headquarters out of the U.S. would do little to stop top-line federal regulatory oversight, but said that a more favorable host government would be helpful.
"I think the U.S. is losing the crypto race," Garlinghouse said. "We're seeing other countries around the world embrace crypto and digital assets and the U.S. is lagging behind."
Garlinghouse pointed to China as a leading example of a country that is embracing cryptocurrency. He noted that China accounts for 65% of all Bitcoin mining activity.
"China is really leading the way on digital currency innovation," Garlinghouse said. "I think the U.S. needs to wake up and realize that we're at risk of losing this innovation if we don't get our act together."
Garlinghouse also said that he would be open to working with a potential Joe Biden administration to "repatriate" miners currently domiciled in China.
"I think there's an opportunity for the U.S. to work with China on this," Garlinghouse said. "We can work together to ensure that the U.S. remains a leader in the global crypto economy."
