**Republicans Urge EPA to Study Crypto Mining’s Environmental Impacts**
A group of Republican lawmakers is urging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to study the environmental impacts of cryptocurrency mining.
In a letter to EPA Administrator Michael Regan, the lawmakers said that the agency should conduct "a comprehensive analysis as it relates to understanding the potential environmental effects of digital asset mining."
The letter was signed by Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), one of the authors of new legislation to regulate cryptocurrency, and Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), the ranking Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, along with three other senators and nine House members.
The lawmakers argued that the U.S. government should do nothing to disrupt American leadership in the cryptocurrency sector.
"We urge you to conduct a thorough analysis of the environmental impacts of digital asset mining," the letter said. "We believe that such an analysis will help to ensure that the United States remains a global leader in this emerging industry."
The letter comes after a group of Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to the EPA urging the agency to consider the environmental impacts of proof-of-stake mining technology, which they say could have "99.99% lower energy demands" than proof-of-work mining.
The Republican letter notes that "a substantial portion of digital asset miners' energy use is based on renewable sources," and that many of the mining operations "use other power sources, like natural gas, that otherwise go unused."
The letter also argues that the government should not pick winners and losers in the cryptocurrency industry.
"The United States should not be in the business of picking winners and losers in the emerging digital asset industry," the letter said. "Rather, we should let the free market determine which technologies succeed and which ones fail."
