Reddit is bringing back bitcoin payments, and the site may add support for Ethereum and Litecoin in the future, the company's chief technology officer said.
Bitcoin payments were disabled on Reddit in March due to high fees on the Bitcoin network. However, the site is now looking to add more cryptocurrencies than just bitcoin this time around, CTO Steve Huffman said in an interview with The Block.
"We have been looking at other cryptocurrencies," Huffman said. "As a matter of fact, that is part of the issue with the high fees on the bitcoin network. We are looking at Ethereum and Litecoin that are right by Coinbase."
Coinbase Commerce, which allows merchants to accept multiple cryptocurrencies, was launched in March. Reddit said at the time that it would be disabling its bitcoin payments option in favor of Coinbase Commerce.
In the interview with The Block, Huffman said that Reddit is still working on the integration of Coinbase Commerce and that it is not yet clear when bitcoin payments will be fully restored.
"We are still working on it," he said. "We are not quite ready to flip the switch yet."
Huffman also said that Reddit is considering adding support for other cryptocurrencies in the future, but that it is not yet decided which ones.
"We are definitely looking at other cryptocurrencies," he said. "But we have not made any decisions yet."
