Torus Kling Blockchain IFSC has partnered with the Indian International Exchange (India INX) to launch the country's first Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which will be regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA).
The ETFs will be distributed through Torus' global distribution network and the company is targeting AUM of $1 billion in the first two years.
India INX CEO V. Balasubramaniam said: "This is part of our strategic innovation initiative to standardise the services offered with many other international financial centres."
Torus Kling Blockchain IFSC CEO Krishna Mohan Meenavalli said the ETFs will allow investors to trade through their regular investment accounts, protecting them from the security concerns of cryptocurrency exchanges.
Torus Kling Blockchain IFSC plans to launch the ETFs in Gift City later this year, subject to IFSCA and other regulatory approvals.
If completed, Torus' ETF product will be the first cryptocurrency-backed ETF to launch outside of the US, which approved three Bitcoin ETFs to operate in late 2021.
However, this announcement comes as a surprise as India's stance on crypto has been extremely hostile in recent months.
India has caused consternation in the crypto community with its proposed CBDC legislation and a ban on "most" cryptocurrencies, which caused the Bitcoin price in India to crash by $10,000.
However, India has recently begun to reconsider its blanket ban on the industry, instead opting for more appropriate regulations this year.
The legal battle in India is still far from over, however, with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) continuing to call for a ban on cryptocurrencies.
