**British Virgin Islands to launch its own dollar-pegged stablecoin**
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) will launch its own dollar-pegged stablecoin, the BVI Dollar (BVD), in a bid to boost its financial services industry and attract more tourists.
The BVD will be issued by Lifelabs, a blockchain technology company based in the BVI. The coin will be backed 1:1 by US dollars held in reserve.
Lifelabs is also developing a Rapid Cash Response (RCR) fund, which will provide support in the event of a national emergency. The RCR fund will be backed by BVD and other cryptocurrencies.
The BVI government has endorsed the BVD and RCR initiatives. Prime Minister Andrew Fahie said:
“The importance of blockchain technology and the benefits that cryptocurrencies can bring to the BVI are huge. We welcome these initiatives to our country with open arms. Our partners, Lifelabs, have proven that their doctrine is not just a thin theory. We look forward to this cooperation.”
The BVD is expected to launch in early 2020.
