Despite internal government disagreements, a national cryptocurrency for the Marshall Islands is currently in development.
In a recent blog post, the coin development team – dubbed Sovereign (SOV) – revealed that it has “made good progress in finding partners, investors, and developers” to help move the project forward. The team said it plans to launch SOV this year.
The team behind the national cryptocurrency includes Dr. Peter Dittus, the former Secretary General of the International Payments Bank.
The project has also announced a partnership with “smart banks” that could be Tangem, a Swiss-Singaporean startup that produces cryptocurrency hardware wallets.
The Marshall Islands’ National Legislature approved the development of a national digital currency in February 2018. The digital currency would be used alongside the U.S. dollar, which is the main currency of the island nation.
In September, the project received criticism from major financial institutions including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The IMF warned that there could be “significant negative consequences” if cryptocurrencies were used as legal tender, saying: “The potential financial benefits are not significant relative to the costs incurred from economic, AML/CFT, and operational risks.”
In November, President Hilda Heine won a second term in office after her party voted in favor of a plan to introduce the national cryptocurrency.
