**NSD: The World's Largest Central Securities Depository Explores Two Key Blockchain Use Cases**
The NSD, the world's largest central securities depository, has been exploring two key blockchain use cases: recording legally binding information and enhancing digital collaboration in a multi-party environment.
Artem Duvanov, the NSD's director of innovation, told CoinDesk that the first use case is essential because blockchains are useless if they store information that has no legal consequences.
"Centralized systems are inherently vulnerable to operational, legal, and cybersecurity risks," Duvanov said. "Blockchain allows us to mitigate these risks with lower costs that can be achieved through enhancement of traditionally digital collaboration in multi-party entity-to-entity reconciliations, audits, and other external means."
The NSD's proxy voting trial is an example of what the organization believes to be a true use case for a blockchain or distributed ledger.
As explained in the NSD's 2016 announcement, the NSD is using a test blockchain to process messages between the issuers of securities within a digital environment, ensuring that all votes are properly "submitted and accounted for."
"[In this case,] blockchain doesn’t bring new functions for customers, end investors or issuers, but it ensures a voting environment with dramatically less operational, legal and cybersecurity risks," Duvanov said.
The NSD is also working on a solution to the confidentiality challenges that have been identified by other central securities depositories.
"The main obstacle for implementation of blockchain in corporate environment is lack of confidentiality mechanisms in existing platforms," Duvanov said.
The NSD plans to provide a "limited solution" to the Linux-led Hyperledger blockchain project this year.
Duvanov concluded by saying that blockchain cannot completely remove intermediaries, but it can decentralize recordkeeping and enhance digital collaboration.
