**Polkadot, a blockchain interoperability project founded by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, has launched its first mainnet called CC1.**
The CC1 mainnet went live at 17:36:21 UTC on December 18, 2020. It is currently running on a proof-of-authority (PoA) consensus algorithm, which is controlled by the Web3 Foundation.
The CC1 mainnet will be used to test various "sudo" modules in the same way as Polkadot's experimental Kusama network did in 2019. Once a chain candidate is selected, Polkadot will transition to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus algorithm with disbursements of the network's DOT token.
Following the network's $145 million token sale in 2017, the Web3 Foundation has prioritized building out integrations with its Substrate custom blockchain protocol along with "parachain" connections to other blockchains.
"Polkadot is, in many respects, the biggest bet in this ecosystem against chain maximalism," Wood said in a video interview published today. "Even if there is one perfect chain, I don't think it would be perfect for very long. I would argue that reality really does not encompass a good plan to be so focused on backing one winner over all others."
