**New Blockchain Intellectual Property Council Aims to Protect Startups, Major Corporations**
A new blockchain intellectual property council has been formed to help startups and major corporations navigate the delicate space between giving away open-source technology and filing patents for different ways that the technology is used.
The council, which is being launched by the Chamber of Digital Commerce, is comprised of 40 founding members from companies including Blockstream, Bloq, Civic, Cognizant, Deloitte, Digital Currency Group, GEM, Medici Ventures, Microsoft and TMX Group.
“No matter where you are in the patent landscape, if you’re a purist who doesn’t believe in patents, or if you’re a company that is filing patents, this is a major factor in the innovation, and future adoption of the industry,” said Perianne Boring, president of the Chamber of Digital Commerce.
The council is being chaired by Marc Kaufman, partner at Rimon Law; Patrick Murk, special counsel at Cooley & fellow at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard; and James Murdock, chief business officer and general counsel at Blockstream.
The council’s mission is to “foster a healthy and sustainable blockchain ecosystem by promoting intellectual property protection and responsible innovation.”
It will focus on three key areas:
* Developing a defensive patent strategy for blockchain companies
* Tackling the issue of patent trolls
* Promoting the use of open-source licensing
“The council will help blockchain companies navigate the complex and ever-changing landscape of intellectual property law,” said Boring. “It will also provide a forum for companies to share best practices and collaborate on solutions to common challenges.”
The council is scheduled to hold its first meeting on March 30.
