The survey, conducted by Cryptovantage, found that 39.7% of respondents had forgotten their cryptocurrency password in the past. Of those, 95.6% were able to recover their investment capital.
However, the average loss for those who were unable to recover their funds was $2,134.
The survey also found that 33% of respondents had been the victim of cryptocurrency fraud, with most of these attacks occurring via email (47.7%), website (45.2%), or fake mobile apps (44.6%).
In addition to fraud and password management, investors surveyed said that "panic selling" was one of their biggest mistakes (38.2%), followed by investing everything in one type of cryptocurrency (32.5%).
In contrast, the survey found that 61% of respondents believe that their cryptocurrency passwords are safe, while only 12% feel that their passwords are not safe.
The survey was based on 1,021 responses from US-based cryptocurrency owners.
