Ryuk is a type of ransomware that locks up victims' computers and demands a ransom payment to decrypt them. It is one of the most prevalent ransomware strains in use today, and has been responsible for over $61 million in damages in the two years since it was first unleashed, according to Forbes.
CipherTrace researchers analyzed 14 Bitcoin addresses linked to Ryuk and found that over $1 million in Bitcoin had been sent to Binance from these addresses. The remaining Bitcoin, worth around $4.7 million, was found to be held on non-exchange wallets.
This suggests that the Ryuk operators may favor Binance as a way to cash out their ransom payments. Binance has been notified of the findings, according to Forbes.
