"We grew very quickly over the past year, and this growth has put a strain on our resources," said OpenSea CEO Devin Finzer. "We need to make sure that we are only working on the things that matter most, and that we are operating in a sustainable way."
The layoffs come as the broader cryptocurrency market has been hit by a sell-off. The price of Bitcoin has fallen by more than 50% from its peak in November, and many other cryptocurrencies have also lost significant value.
OpenSea is not the only crypto company that has been affected by the market downturn. Gemini, Coinbase, Crypto.com, and Bullish.com have all announced layoffs in recent months.
Finzer said that the layoffs put OpenSea in a position to weather up to five years of depressed conditions. He added that the company is still "in a great position to capture what will soon become the largest market on the planet."
