**Ripple Labs Secures $38 Million in Funding to Develop its Cross-Border Payments Network**
Ripple Labs, the company behind the Ripple protocol that enables instant, low-cost payments in any currency, has secured $38 million in funding from a group of investors led by Core Innovation Capital.
Other investors in the round include Venture 51, Camp One Ventures, and IDG Capital Partners, which all participated in the company's $25 million Series A round in 2013.
Ripple Labs plans to use the new funds to continue the development of its cross-border payments network, which it says can reduce the cost of sending money internationally by up to 80%.
The company also plans to use the funds to expand its team and grow its business in new markets.
“Ripple removes friction from even the most basic of payment transactions, leveling the playing field for underserved individuals and emerging markets around the globe,” said Arjan Schütte, founder and managing partner of Core Innovation Capital.
“We are investing in a veteran leadership team with a vision for using one of the most disruptive innovations in financial services to do good and empower people through financial inclusion,” he added.
Ripple Labs is already backed by Google Ventures and California-based VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, which has also invested in Skype, Twitter, and Airbnb.
The company has a number of partnerships with banks and financial institutions around the world, and it recently announced a new partnership with MoneyGram, a global money transfer company.
