**Dubai-based OKX secures virtual asset license in the UAE**
The Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange OKX has secured a virtual asset license in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The license allows OKX to operate in the UAE as a VASP, or virtual asset service provider. It is the third major cryptocurrency exchange to receive a license in the UAE, following FTX and Kraken.
OKX said it will use the license to expand its presence in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
“The MENA region is one of the fastest-growing markets for our industry, and we are very excited to be at the heart of this thriving ecosystem,” said Lennix Lai, general manager of OKX.
“We look forward to working with regulators in the UAE to ensure that we are providing a safe and secure platform for our customers.”
The UAE has been making a push to become a global hub for cryptocurrency trading. In February, the UAE’s Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) announced that it would allow VASPs to establish entities in the country.
FTX was the first exchange to secure a license in March, followed by Kraken in April.
OKX is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume. It has more than 20 million global customers.
