The bill originally included language that would have recognized smart contracts, but that language was omitted from the final version of the bill.
"This is a major step forward for Ohio's blockchain industry," said Scherer in a statement. "This legislation will help to create a more business-friendly environment for blockchain companies in Ohio and will help to attract new investment to the state."
Other states have also taken steps to recognize the legal status of blockchain technology. In Arizona, a law was passed in March that recognizes the legal status of data stored and transacted on a blockchain. California lawmakers are also working on a similar piece of legislation.
