“Cryptocurrency was a real part of our business this past year, even though small, overall,” said Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA.
In an interview with Barron’s, Huang said that he sees cryptocurrency as being as real as any other type of virtual good or video game.
He added that the technology underlying cryptocurrencies has “clear real utility.”
“Tens of millions of virtual goods are created and shared and sold in virtual reality, and people invest onesWORLDS and Virtual Currency All Ties Together,” Huang said.
Despite the growing demand for GPUs from cryptocurrency miners, Huang said that the conversation around sales to miners is not that important for NVIDIA.
“To us, it’s all just demand for GPUs,” he said.
NVIDIA’s Chief Financial Officer, Colette Kress, had also downplayed the impact of cryptocurrency mining during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday, saying that it was hard to quantify how much revenue the company made from sales to cryptocurrency miners.
