In a statement, Emefiele said that the CBN does not “proscribe the use of cryptocurrencies and we do not have the power to do so. What we have done is to prohibit banks from facilitating cryptocurrency transactions.”
The CBN’s statement comes after it issued a circular last month banning all financial institutions from providing services to cryptocurrency exchanges. The ban has led to some cryptocurrency exchanges in Nigeria closing down, while others have been forced to find alternative ways to operate.
Emefiele said that the CBN’s decision to ban cryptocurrency transactions was based on concerns about the risks associated with cryptocurrencies, such as their volatility and the potential for them to be used for money laundering and other illegal activities.
