, Pantera Capital, a leading investment fund in the cryptocurrency market, said in a report published on Wednesday that the price of altcoins is expected to continue to outperform Bitcoin in the next few years.
The report said that although the 2017-like altcoin rally is unlikely to happen again, the crypto market is currently in a “differentiation” cycle, and this trend is expected to continue in the near future.
“Bitcoin is being outperformed by Ethereum and other large cap cryptos in 2020, and we expect this trend to continue,” the investment firm said.
As of this writing, Bitcoin is up 34% year-to-date, while Ethereum is up 88%, 0x is up 98%, and Augur is up 97%. Meanwhile, XRP, despite being one of the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, is down 2% year-to-date.
The report said that as the overall market grows, investors are likely to allocate more capital to smaller altcoins. This is because altcoins are considered to be riskier assets, and investors are more likely to buy them after they have already invested in Bitcoin, which is often the first cryptocurrency that people buy.
The report also said that the growing interest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is a reaction to investors’ fears about the Federal Reserve’s excessive money printing.
“Bitcoin was created as a hedge against the massive money printing by central banks after the last financial crisis,” Pantera Capital CEO Cameron Winklevoss said. “The price of Bitcoin has gone up exponentially over this 10-year period during a time of unprecedented monetary expansion. What is happening in the world today is an order of magnitude bigger.”
Winklevoss added that as the market continues to grow in a sustainable way, altcoins are likely to capture an even larger share of the market than Bitcoin.
“Bitcoin is not the only game in town,” Winklevoss concluded.
