According to the indictment, Willner and his co-conspirators hacked into the trading accounts of over 50 victims and executed fraudulent short sales. A short sale is a transaction in which a trader sells a security they do not own, with the expectation of buying it back at a lower price later.
The profits from the fraudulent short sales were then transferred to cryptocurrency wallets controlled by Willner and his co-conspirators.
Willner faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted.
