El Salvador's decision to make Bitcoin legal tender has been met with opposition from not only regulatory agencies and financial institutions, but also from the people of the country.
On July 21, a group of El Salvadorians, including left-wing unions, student associations, and others, gathered in the National Assembly to protest the law. The protest took place despite a ban on protests by the government that has been in place for the past three months to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
The group of protesters was organized by "Resistance and Rebellion," and they used banners to demand the recall of the law. It is estimated that up to 77% of El Salvadorians think that the legalization of Bitcoin is a bad idea.
"It is the law that creates legal insecurity and can be used to cheat users as well as create conditions for money laundering and property," said activist Idalia Zuñiga.
Other protesters expressed concerns about Bitcoin's price volatility.
