Pakistan's Easypaisa and Malaysia's Valyou have launched a blockchain-based money transfer service, which the bank claims is the first of its kind in the country.
The service allows users to send money between Pakistan and Malaysia in real time, with the bank saying that blockchain will "significantly improve the speed and efficiency of payments."
Roar Bjærum, senior vice president of Telenor Financial Services, said: "Currently, Pakistan receives around $1 billion in remittances from Malaysia every year, and this Easypaisa-Valyou cooperation will revolutionize the way these funds are transferred."
The Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Tariq Bajwa, said: "Remittances contribute more than 6% of GDP, equivalent to more than 50% of our trade deficit, 85% of exports and more than ⅓ of imports in FY17-18."
Alipay, which is backed by Alibaba's Ant Financial, is offering free transactions during the first year of the trial for the new technology.
"By eliminating intermediaries, the new money transfer service helps reduce transaction costs for consumers," the bank said in a statement.
