**New Jersey Halts Two ICOs for Alleged Fraud**
The New Jersey Bureau of Securities has halted two initial coin offerings (ICOs), alleging that the offerings were fraudulent securities offerings.
ZOPTAX and Unocall were both accused of offering unregistered securities. ZOPTAX was seeking between $500,000 and $3.4 million for its Zoptax coins, while Unocall was offering tokens and investments in its staking protocol, which offered daily interest returns between 0.18% and 0.88%.
The New Jersey Attorney General's Office said that the nature of the issuance, the purpose of the investments, and the misleading consumer information were behind the decision to halt the ICOs.
“The Bureau of Securities stands ready to enforce our investor protection laws in cases involving initial coin offerings and cryptocurrency-related investment schemes,” said New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal. “As innovation in the online cryptocurrency-related investment markets continues, market players need to understand that the rules still apply to them.”
Since January 2019, Operation Cryptosweep has 85 pending or completed cases, 330 inquiries or investigations, and eight enforcement actions, including ZOPTAX and Unocall.
Initial coin offerings have come under increased scrutiny following a 2017 breakout and subsequent 2018 collapse. Larger regulatory bodies like the CFTC and SEC have also recently gone after ICOs. Earlier this week, ICO KIK filed a 130-page summary rebuttal against the SEC’s recent enforcement actions against it.
