**South Africa's central bank warns of risks of cryptocurrencies**
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has warned of the risks of cryptocurrencies, saying that they are "risky" and that the financial sector should be aware of those risks and price them accordingly.
“We are of the view that cryptocurrencies are risky and we want to ensure that the financial sector is aware of those risks and pricing for those risks properly,” said SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago.
The SARB's comments come as the country's financial regulator, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), is considering how to regulate cryptocurrencies.
In June, the FSCA said it would start to deal with crypto assets "in a phased and structured approach."
The SARB's warning comes as the crypto market has been hit by a number of high-profile scandals, including the collapse of South African crypto investment firm Africrypt and the recent implosion of Celsius Network.
