**Real estate investor Adam Slipakoff purchased a three-bedroom house in South Carolina for $175,000 through an NFT marketplace over the weekend.**
The NFT purchase agreement for the house at 149 Cottage Lake Way in Columbia was facilitated by Roofstock Onchain, the Web3 arm of real estate investment company Roofstock.
Slipakoff said he was able to purchase the house with clear title with just one click, rather than having to wait months to complete the traditional real estate transaction process.
Founded in 2015, Roofstock specializes in single-family rental homes and has facilitated more than $5 billion in investment transactions to date. This is the first time the company has sold a home in the form of an NFT.
Roofstock's blockchain director Geoff Thompson called the transaction a "major milestone" in the evolution of real estate transactions for rent.
Roofstock explained that each rental asset, which is owned by a Wyoming limited liability company (LLC), has a digital twin in the form of an NFT (Home onchain) on the Ethereum blockchain. This Home Onchain identity can be easily transferred whenever the ownership of the underlying property changes.
NFTs have come a long way since their early days as a novelty, evolving into a type of property with many real-world uses across a variety of industries. For example, the NFT sports market grew from an estimated $1.3 billion in 2021 to over $2.6 billion in the third quarter of 2022, as more and more fans are willing to pay to own NFTs of memorable sporting moments.
Retailers like Starbucks have also gotten in on the NFT action, with the coffee giant partnering with Polygon in September to launch a rewards program based on NFTs.
