A new bill has been introduced in the US House of Representatives that would prohibit federal candidates from accepting cryptocurrency donations.

If passed, the bill would make it illegal for federal candidates to solicit or accept cryptocurrency donations. It would also prohibit political committees, political funds, and party units from accepting cryptocurrency donations.

The bill would impose a civil penalty of up to $3,000 on any person who knowingly solicits or accepts a cryptocurrency donation.
“This bill would help to protect the integrity of our elections by preventing foreign actors from using cryptocurrency to influence our political system,” Himes said in a statement.
“Cryptocurrency is a new and emerging asset class, and we need to make sure that it is not used to undermine our democracy,” Emmer said.
The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Financial Services for consideration.
