**Malta's Financial Regulator Warns Against Cryptocurrency Firm StocksBTC**
The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) has issued a warning against cryptocurrency firm StocksBTC, saying that the company is not licensed to provide financial services in the country.
In a statement, the MFSA said that StocksBTC "appears to be offering investment and/or other financial services to consumers." The regulator noted that StocksBTC is not "licensed or otherwise authorized by the MFSA to provide any type of financial services which are required to be licensed or otherwise authorized under Maltese law."
The MFSA warned investors and consumers of financial services to "ascertain that the entity with whom the investment or transaction is being made is authorized to provide services by another financial services regulatory authority as applicable."
The MFSA has taken a largely cautious approach to the cryptocurrency space to date, and today's warning is the first related to cryptocurrency since it put out a warning on cryptocurrency exchanges in July 2018.
The warning comes just over two months after the MFSA released its new cryptocurrency rulebook, which was developed in consultation with industry stakeholders.
Despite the warning, cryptocurrency businesses continue to eye Malta as a potential base of operations. In late January, cryptocurrency exchange Binance announced that it would open an office in Malta.
