Ledgerx, a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, has been granted approval by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to launch a retail bitcoin futures product.
The approval marks a significant milestone for Ledgerx, which has been working towards launching a retail-focused offering for some time. The company first filed for a CFTC license in November 2018.
“We’re excited to receive approval from the CFTC to launch our retail bitcoin futures product,” said Juthica Chou, chief risk and operating officer at Ledgerx. “This is a major milestone for us, and we’re grateful for the CFTC’s careful review of our application.”
Ledgerx’s retail bitcoin futures product will be offered on a new platform called Omni. The platform will be built on Ledgerx’s existing infrastructure and will offer both custom and trading services.
“We’re confident that Omni will provide retail investors with a top-tier experience,” said Chou. “We’ve been operating a physically-settled bitcoin market for more than a year and a half, and we have a deep understanding of the needs of our customers.”
Ledgerx is one of several companies that have been working to launch a physically-settled bitcoin futures product. CME Group and CBOE Global Markets both launched cash-settled bitcoin futures products in December 2017, but no company has yet to launch a physically-settled product.
Ledgerx’s approval from the CFTC is a significant step towards bringing a physically-settled bitcoin futures product to market. The company is now one step closer to becoming the first exchange to offer such a product.
