**New survey reveals that most UK crypto investors are clueless**
A new survey has found that nearly two-thirds (36%) of UK retail cryptocurrency investors had little or no understanding of the asset class when they first invested.
The survey, conducted by Oxford Risk, a commercial software company that specializes in products for asset managers and financial services firms, found that 21% of current crypto investors still rate their understanding of the asset class as low.
The survey of 1,038 UK adults found that FOMO, or the fear of missing out, was a key driver of investment in digital assets. About 35% of respondents said they had invested in crypto because they had read about the soaring prices, while 15% said they had been encouraged to invest by friends or family.
Greg B Davies, head of behavioural finance at Oxford Risk, said:
“It is concerning that so many people are investing in crypto without really understanding what they are doing and are being influenced by the hype and the encouragement of others. It is worrying if people are putting significant amounts of money into crypto without understanding what they are buying.”
A large minority of investors were also uncertain about the future of the market: 45% said they did not know if crypto prices would continue to rise, 32% did not believe they would and 24% firmly believed they would.
Despite this, 21% of those surveyed said they planned to buy crypto for the first time this year or increase their current holdings.
Most investors were investing relatively small amounts of money in crypto: 81% said they were only buying a little crypto to “see what happens”, 76% had invested less than 5% of their total savings and 41% had invested less than 1%.
However, 7% of investors had bet up to 20% of their total assets on crypto, while 10% had bet more than 10%.
The findings of the survey are in line with a recent study by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which found that 2.3 million adults in the UK held crypto assets as of June 2021, up from 1.9 million in 2020.
In addition to the increase in the number of investors, the FCA found that the average holding amount had increased to £300 ($420), up from £260 ($370) in 2020.
The increase in awareness of crypto has also continued, with 78% of UK adults saying they have heard of crypto, up from 73% in the previous year. However, like Oxford Risk, the FCA noted a significant lack of understanding of crypto among consumers.
