**Japan Police: At Least 149 Cryptocurrency Exchange Hacks in 2017**
**Tokyo, Japan -** The National Police Agency of Japan (NPA) has released data showing that at least 149 cryptocurrency exchange hacks occurred in the country last year. The data, which was published on the NPA's website, shows that the hacks resulted in the loss of around 662 million yen (US$5.9 million).
Of the 149 hacks, 16 affected cryptocurrency exchanges and three wallet operators. Bitcoin was the most targeted cryptocurrency, with 85 BTC stolen.
The NPA noted that the recent $530 million hack of the Coincheck exchange is not included in its 2017 statistics.
The NPA also found that 122 of the hacks (80% of the total) did not incorporate extra levels of security such as two-factor authentication.
The NPA attributed the increase in the number of hacks to the rising price of Bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency market. For example, data shows that unauthorized remittances increased from 7 cases in April to 19 and 41 in May and June, respectively.
The data release comes as part of the NPA's efforts to investigate thefts of assets from cryptocurrency investors in Japan following the notorious collapse of the Mt. Gox exchange in 2014 and the government's extensive actions to force exchanges to protect cryptocurrency investors since.
