Indonesia is considering imposing income tax on cryptocurrency profits, the country's tax office said on Tuesday.
Neilmaldrin Noor, a spokesman for the Indonesian tax office, told Reuters that the plan was still in the discussion stage.
“It is important to know ... if there is a profit or earn capital from a transaction, then the profit is the object of the income tax. So the taxpayer receives the capital, must pay taxes and report,” he said.
Indonesia considers cryptocurrencies as a commodity for trading but banned use as a domestic payment tool.
The country's cryptocurrency tax plan was first revealed in the month before Teguh Kurniawan Harmanda, COO of the Tokocrypto local cryptocurrency exchange, told Indonesia CNBC that players in the industry and agencies of the Government, including the Future Commodity Exchange Board of the Ministry of Trade (Bappbti), is discussing how to impose tax on cryptocurrency transactions.
Harmanda said the proposed income tax rate for cryptocurrency profit is 0.05%, smaller than the income tax on stock transactions, currently at 0.1%.
