HTC, a Taiwanese phone company, introduced a new smartphone called “HTC EXODUS” on Tuesday, claiming it would be “the world’s first blockchain smartphone.”
The Android-based smartphone will support decentralized applications (DApps) like Cryptokitties. It will also feature a secure hardware wallet that allows users to access global e-wallets pre-installed on the device. The smartphone is also compatible with multiple protocols and supports cross-chain communication.

The device was developed by a team led by Phil Chen, who previously led the development of HTC’s Vive virtual reality equipment. Chen, who now holds the position of Blockchain Chief Officer, will oversee all cryptocurrency and blockchain projects for the Taiwanese phone manufacturer.
“Through our EXODUS product, we are excited to support blockchain protocols such as Bitcoin, Lightning Networks, Ethereum, Dfinity, and Wanchain,” Chen wrote in a blog post on social media. “We are committed to supporting the entire blockchain ecosystem, and in the coming months, we will announce additional partnerships. Together, we will build a network of blockchain technology experiences and decentralized applications for our target customers.”
Chen also expressed his hope that the groundbreaking hardware of the EXODUS could help users achieve the goal of truly “owning their data.”
He said:
“I want to see a world where people can truly own their data (browser history, personal information, assets, wallets, email, messages, etc.) without having to rely on a centralized server that could be ‘owned’ by other organizations. There is much work to be done, but I believe such a hardware will make a significant contribution to the blockchain era.”
HTC has not yet disclosed the price of the Exodus, but the company has hinted that it will accept cryptocurrency payments for the device when it launches to the public.
