**SFC to allow individual investors to participate in cryptocurrency transactions from June 1**
The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) announced on May 23 that it will allow individual investors to participate in cryptocurrency transactions from June 1, when the regulatory framework for virtual asset trading platforms licensed by the SFC comes into effect.
The SFC received a total of 152 suggestions from organizations, experts and market participants, most of which agreed to allow individual investors to participate in cryptocurrency transactions.
In response to the suggestions, the SFC will prepare more mechanisms to protect those investors, including regulations on the process of registration, operation monitoring, listing tokens, account opening criteria and transparency of information.
Julia Leung, director of the SFC, said: “The provision of a legal framework is clearly the key to promoting the responsible development process. The legal framework of Hong Kong’s comprehensive virtual property will comply with the rules of ‘common fields, common risks, general regulations’ and set goals for investors and limit serious risks. That will allow this industry to develop sustainably and promote progress.”
Hong Kong first issued guidelines for virtual asset transactions in February, according to which cryptocurrency companies are allowed to provide services to professional investors, but only support some large cryptocurrencies at the time of launch. The other rule also sets the requirements of property depository, separate between investors’ money and money of the enterprise, preventing conflicts of interest and imposing network security measures, etc.
Hong Kong’s reopening back to the cryptocurrency industry, despite the ban on the mainland, is a signal that China is gradually changing attitudes with Crypto.
Many cryptocurrency companies, especially exchanges, have flocked to Hong Kong in the past months to set up a branch and register a license to SFC in the hope of providing services in the market. Hong Kong officials are also reported to have been proactive in opening a meeting between banking sector and crypto companies to connect both.
