A new lawsuit filed by Google alleges that a massive botnet used Bitcoin’s blockchain to stay online and evade law enforcement.
The botnet, known as “GloPeta,” is said to have infected more than 1 million devices worldwide. It was used to mine cryptocurrency, send spam, and distribute malware.
The botnet operators allegedly used Bitcoin’s blockchain to store the addresses of command-and-control servers. This allowed the botnet to stay online even if one of the servers was taken down.
“This is the first known case of a botnet using this approach,” said Chainalysis, a blockchain analysis firm that helped Google investigate the botnet.
Google says that it has already taken steps to disrupt the botnet, but the fact that it uses the Bitcoin blockchain means that the operators can resurrect the network at any time.
“The GloPeta botnet cannot be eradicated entirely without neutralizing its blockchain-based infrastructure,” the complaint said.
Google is suing the botnet operators for fraud and racketeering.
