The company’s cryptocurrency mining and exchange operations generated revenue of 1.6 billion yen ($14.6 million) in the quarter, up 10% from the previous quarter.
GMO’s cryptocurrency exchange, GMO Coin, had 208,000 active users in October, with trading volume of around 89 billion yen ($781 million). The company’s mining revenue increased by 16% from the previous quarter to 1 billion yen ($8.9 million).
GMO also announced that it has changed the transaction code for its Japanese yen-backed stablecoin, GMO Japanese Yen, from Gjy to Gyen. The company plans to launch its Bronze stablecoin, which is pegged to the Japanese yen, in international markets in 2019.
In March, Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) issued a directive to GMO Coin following the Coincheck hack. The company was ordered to improve its risk management practices and provide reports on its systems. GMO Coin subsequently set up an auditing and information security office to develop a more robust security framework.
GMO’s announcement comes as several major cryptocurrency mining companies have released their financial results for the third quarter. While California-based semiconductor manufacturer AMD reported a modest revenue increase, Canadian bitcoin mining company Hut 8 Mining declared a record revenue of $13.5 million for the quarter.
