**Tokyo, Japan -** Mark Karpeles, the CEO of the now-defunct bitcoin exchange Mt Gox, has been arrested in Japan.
Karpeles was arrested on Friday morning (local time) on suspicion of falsifying financial statements. He has not yet been charged with any crimes.
The arrest comes as the Japanese government continues to investigate the collapse of Mt Gox, which filed for bankruptcy in February 2014. At the time of its collapse, Mt Gox was estimated to have lost as much as 744,4000 BTC or $350m in customer funds.
Karpeles has denied any wrongdoing and has said that he will fight the charges.
