**Gartner Hype Cycle: Cryptocurrency and Exchanges Move Toward Mainstream Adoption**
According to Gartner's annual Hype Cycle report, cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency exchanges have moved into the "trough of disillusionment" as their hype has waned.
The report, which tracks the maturity of emerging technologies, places cryptocurrencies in the "digital business" category, along with augmented reality, the internet of things, and wearables.
Gartner defines the trough of disillusionment as the period when "media interest wanes, disillusionment sets in, and the technology is perceived as having little or no value."
However, the report notes that cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency exchanges still have the potential for "significant impact" and are rated "high" for transformational impact.
This means that they have the potential to create new ways to save or make money, while cryptocurrency exchanges are rated "moderate" for transformational impact, meaning they provide "incremental" improvements to existing processes.
Despite the decline in hype, cryptocurrencies have still received over $860 million in venture capital investment to date.
However, our recent State of Bitcoin report indicated that mainstream media mentions of bitcoin have been on the decline this year, as "blockchain" has grown as a buzzword.
In 2014, Jerry Brito, now executive director at Coin Center, told CoinDesk that he had started to witness a hype slump:
"At one point, bitcoin and virtual currencies were a novel and interesting story.
Last November, researchers in Poland found a strong correlation between bitcoin's price and media "hype." Whether this - or the descent into the "trough of disillusionment" - explains the currency's recent dip remains to be seen.
