FTX.US, the U.S. arm of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, will launch an Ethereum NFT marketplace in Q2, the company announced Tuesday. The marketplace will initially support Ethereum NFTs, with Solana NFTs to be added at a later date.
FTX.US is looking to make up for lost time in the NFT market. The company's Solana-based NFT marketplace, which launched in December, was met with underwhelming user uptake.
To attract users to its Ethereum NFT marketplace, FTX.US is offering a lower fee structure than rival NFT exchanges (2% compared with OpenSea's 2.5%) and is subsidizing withdrawal fees.
Another key difference between FTX.US and other NFT marketplaces is that FTX.US will take custody of listed Ethereum NFTs, which the company says will save users money. OpenSea leaves owners in control of their assets until sale.
"By not requiring gas for doing things like bids, we are hoping to see a lot more price action and price discovery on the platform, and we hope that in general attracts liquidity," said Brett Harrison, president of FTX.US.
Users will eventually be able to use non-custodial wallets like MetaMask for Ethereum and Phantom for Solana to interact with FTX.US NFTs, Harrison said. However, he said there is more value in embracing accessibility first.
FTX.US plans to vet all Ethereum NFT projects before listing to ensure they don't run afoul of securities laws or aren't counterfeit rip-offs.
